Ready for the Global Conference?
By Pilita Clark – Paris
Would you like a piece of chicken with herbs and a glass of Chardonnay wine? How about a bit of crème caramel or tarte au chocolat?
All this is on the menu at the UN’s global conference about the environment in Paris (COP21). And there is also a bakery there offering hot baguettes and croissants.
So it looks like the French are doing their best to organize good meals for the delegates this year. The food at these meetings in the past has not been very tasty. That’s why some delegates secretly took food from outside with them into the venue. This year, there are many cafés and restaurants around the venue of the conference, in the north of Paris.
You can also find many relaxation rooms with sofas and soft lights there. This is a change for older delegates. Some talks can last for over 24 hours and some of them have had to sleep on the floor. If delegates would like to take a break from their talks about environmental issues, they can spend time in the new meditation rooms.
Environmentalists have said there are not enough vegetarian meals for such a conference. But the organizers have thought about the environment and will charge delegates 1 euro for a plastic cup which they will receive back when they return the cup. This makes sure people use less plastic glasses and so there is less waste.
They also don’t have to take a polluting taxi back to their hotel after the conference. They can simply book an electric car or get a pass for Paris trains and buses, for free.
This conference is better organized than the last conference in Copenhagen in 2009, where delegates had to stand in long lines and wait outside for hours to get in the conference building because the security staff had too much to do.
This time, each delegate has a time when they must arrive. The Paris terror attacks made people think it could be chaotic, but the lines to get through security have been quick.
The question is: will the better organization of the conference really help the delegates to find a global climate agreement? It would be the first since 1997.

Can ‘Smart Cups’ Help Your Thirst?
By Tim Bradshaw
Drinking water is one of our most basic needs. Our body tells us when we need to drink: we feel thirsty. Adults do not normally have a problem remembering to drink enough water to survive.
But many companies want to tell us that we have a hydration problem. New smart cups from companies such as Thermos and Mark One—a start-up based in San Francisco—can connect with a smartphone to provide detailed information about water drinking habits. But does drinking water really need all this technology?
Being well hydrated has many benefits: it makes us feel more focused, and can also make the body’s immune system stronger. The traditional advice is to drink eight glasses of water a day, but actually the true recommendations are higher: 2.7 litres per day for women, and 3.7 for men, according to the US Institute of Medicine. However, the institute also said that most people can stay hydrated simply by drinking when thirsty.
Mark One believes that its smart cup technology can do a better job than humans. I used their $100 cup, called Pryme Vessyl. I told the app my age, weight, height, sleeping hours and exercise habits. Pryme Vessyl uses this data to create a personal hydration target. A blue light on the cup lights up when you have drunk enough.
Apart from the light, the cup has a minimalist design. It is made of plain white plastic, and is pleasant to hold, whether the cup contains iced water or hot tea. The inside is made of glass, which makes the whole thing heavy to hold. The top does not prevent leaks, making the cup unsuitable for use during exercise—the one time when it might be really useful.
When using Pryme, I found that my motivation to continue was simple: I wanted to stop the endless notifications arriving on my phone. Every time I took a sip of water, my phone would deliver a message telling me to take another, in order to “get to the next level.”
Mark One is also planning to develop a more advanced cup, which can track what you drink in more detail, including information about calorie and caffeine consumption. However, this product is already more than a year behind schedule, and it is not clear when it will be available.
Mark One
The $60 Smart Lid, made by Thermos, is more basic. The app tracks how much water is in the bottle, the temperature, how much water you have drunk, and other useless statistics such as how many minutes you have spent drinking or how many sips you have taken that day. You can also set a water consumption goal in litres and see how close you are to your daily target.
The plastic bottle and its lid are light and watertight, which at least makes it more practical than the Pryme. But I found the data transfer unreliable. One time, it told me I had spent 1,143 minutes taking one sip to consume seven millilitres of water.
The human body comes with excellent hydration sensors, which are pre-installed at no cost to the user. We may all benefit from the occasional reminder to drink more water, but there are far cheaper ways to do that than these devices. The “Internet of things” may be real, but the idea that a cup or bottle must be smart just does not hold water.
1) hydration: any of a class of compounds containing chemically combined water. 2) minimalist: a person who favors a moderate approach to the achievement of a set of goals or who holds minimal expectations for the success of a program / 미니멀리스트(되도록 소수의 단순한 요소를 통해 최대 효과를 이루려는 사고방식을 지닌 예술가)

5) leak: an unintended hole, crack, or the like, through which liquid, gas, light, etc., enters or escapes / (액체・기체가) 새는 곳[구멍/틈], 누출(되는 액체・기체)
7) motivation: the act or an instance of motivating, or providing with a reason to act in a certain way / 자극, 유도; (행동의) 동기 부여; 학습 의욕 유발
8) sip: to drink (a liquid) a little at a time; take small tastes of / (음료를) 홀짝이다[거리다], 조금씩 마시다
9) lid: a removable or hinged cover for closing the opening, usually at the top, of a pot, jar, trunk, etc.; a movable cover /
10) watertight: constructed or fitted so tightly as to be impervious to water /
11) practical: adapted or designed for actual use; useful /

Stolen Identities
By Sam Jones Defence and Security Editor
Personal details of more than 600,000 customers were stolen from companies in the UK in 2014, showing the digital weaknesses in British business.
Senior government officials said that “tens of thousands” of Britons’ identities were for sale on the web, including thousands of detailed profiles stolen from the government’s own computer systems, with all the information necessary to completely seize control of an individual’s digital identity.
A set of British personal details, including all the bank account information necessary to steal money, is available on the web for $30 on average, depending on the individual’s wealth, a security official said.
Profiles hacked from the government database, which contains information shared by departments have been available for sale at $75, they said.
A government spokesperson said that it had invested more than £860m in cyber security and had a number of “very effective” schemes with which to get business. “We are looking carefully at the level of regulation. Every company should be aware of the risk . . . and be confident that the company has proper security in place.”
TalkTalk, a mobile telephone company which was targeted in a cyber attack that showed its customers’ personal information, has still not said how many records were taken. A 15-year-old boy was held responsible for the incident but was later released.
TalkTalk has said the attack has had less impact than they originally thought, and only a small part of its 4million customers were likely to be affected.
The incident is still the worst information breach via a cyber attack for a UK company, however, and has had criticism over how safe British businesses are in cyber space.
Symantec, the information security company said it knew of at least 609,239 individuals’ personal details revealed at UK-based companies last year. The company is one of many which tracks breaches. Overall, according to Symantec, 358m identities were revealed worldwide.
“Today, almost every company is a digital company yet few think about how digital their organisation is and as a result, have not analysed the true risk of having a cyber security breach,” said Darren Thomson, chief technology officer for Symantec.
Security officials and politicians have been careful not to openly criticise the TalkTalk hack, but many privately do for not having better information protection.
1) seize: to take possession of by force or at will / (흔히 폭력을 써서) 장악하다, 점령하다

3) a set of: 일련의
4) scheme: a plan, design, or program of action to be followed; project / (운영) 계획, 제도

Alton Towers’ roller coaster “The Smiler” has been closed for six months. Six months ago, it crashed and maimed a lot of passengers. The owner of the theme park, Merlin Entertainments will probably have to give a lot of money to the people hurt in the accident and may even have to close the £18m ride. This type of accident can scare away customers for months.
Merlin Entertainments
However, this accident will not be the end for Merlin. Merlin's debts are lower than their competitors like Six Flags and Cedar Fair. Unlike them, they earn money from all around the world and not just in the US. Merlin do not just sell thrills on rollercoasters, they supply a continuous important service - entertainment for bored children.
Their biggest division, Midway Attractions, has about 100 smaller, museums in towns and cities like Madame Tussauds and SeaLife. Parents will pay a lot of money for a few hours of peace and quiet from their children. Together with Legoland parks, these places earn 70 per cent of revenue.
A Midway project costs less than £10m to develop. Merlin do not usually own the park land, and the theme (Shrek, Tussauds, CBeebies) is often licensed and already popular. The biggest risk Merlin has is Legoland, which will open in Dubai, China and more. It is not really a big risk though because playing with Lego is like a common language for children.
The other risks in this entertainment industry are boring too. Rain is always a problem in the UK. A strong currency is also a problem. A strong pound makes British people go to other countries on holiday, and makes foreign income from tourists less valuable. Another problem is that the seasonal contracts Merlin needs might be more difficult to get in the future because of changes in the law.
However, even with these problems Merlin is doing well in the stock market and will probably continue to do well in the future.
2) maim: to deprive of the use of some part of the body by wounding or the like; cripple /

Japanese Companies Learning to Love English

By Jennifer Thompson in Tokyo,
English, which is the common language of companies from Paris to Nairobi, is still a foreign language for most Japanese businesses.
Japans workforce is behind China, South Korea and even Iran when it comes to English language skills according to GlobalEnglish, an English communication software company owned by Financial Times parent company Pearson.
Many of the countries big companies are looking for business outside of Japan. This is why English—a language schoolchildren usually spend at least six years learning—is getting more and more important for many Japanese companies.
Bridgestone announced that English would become an official company language and Takeda launched an English language learning service last year and has board meetings in English.
International expansion was also the reason Fast Retailing made English the official language a year ago. Its Uniqlo fashion shops are doing well in Asia, Europe, the US and Australia, and a third of its sales comes from overseas.
Japanese executives who want promotion must do well in the TOEIC exam, which measures English language skills. “It continues to be the common language in the region,” says Fast Retailing.
Rakuten, Japan’s biggest e-commerce group asks all employees to communicate in English, apart from non-business conversation. Low TOEIC scores make promotion possibilities difficult.
Having done business as far away as Canada, the UK, France, Brazil and Singapore, the company says that having a common language helps “us have the same strategy".
Many are not sure that this will be successful, or even work.
Some employees question if making Japanese people speak to each other in a language that they find difficult is useful. Also some employees say that companies want to show that they are an English speaking company, but in practice things are very different.
An official at Fast Retailing says that not all staff are doing as they are told, saying some who joined the company when it was concentrating on the Japanese market have since been moved to “domestically focused” roles as the company reorganises and looks more and more for growth outside of Japan.
Fast Retailing

Small Talk Makes a Big Difference to Your Career
By Lucy Kellaway
A young woman I know who works for a media company has been told by her boss that she has a problem: she doesn’t chat enough at work. She thought it was unfair to be criticised for doing her work instead of wasting time chatting to her colleagues.
Inga Beale, head of insurance company Lloyd’s of London, said something similar last year. According to her, some women do not succeed in their careers because they do not chat enough with colleagues.
At first, I thought it was nonsense. Everyone knows that women talk all the time at work. Also, chatting is surely not a way to succeed. If I have had any success in my career, it is because I spent less time chatting and more time working.
However, this is only my experience. In order to find out more, I have spent the past few weeks in various offices - both my own and other people’s - to see how people behave. My research suggests that Ms Beale could be right.
The first thing I noticed is that there is very little chatting in offices. This could be because people are chatting online, or perhaps because people are under more pressure these days. But, when I did see people chatting, they were usually men. The women were generally head-down, working.
If women are quieter at work, there are lots of possible explanations. It could be because most conversations are started by men, or because women prefer talking to other women, and in most offices men still outnumber women. However, these ideas do not explain my experience recently visiting the offices of Mumsnet. A large office was filled with several dozen women, each working in front of a screen. It was the quietest and most diligent office I’d ever been to.
This suggests a truer answer. Women with children want to get their work done efficiently because they need to go home. When my children were younger, I needed to leave the office at 5.55pm, and even I stopped chatting in order to work instead. Women without children may also rather do their chatting with their real friends after work, rather than waste time on workplace chat.
If women do talk less at work, does it matter? I fear it does. If you don’t talk, people don’t like you much. A young acquaintance tells me she is now making time every day for chatter. She now sees talk as a type of work, and does it like any other task. It is still early to tell, but she says it is working.
1) outnumber: to exceed in number / …

If women do talk less at work, does it matter? I fear it does. If you don’t talk, people don’t like you much. A young acquaintance tells me she is now making time every day for chatter. She now sees talk as a type of work, and does it like any other task. It is still early to tell, but she says it is working.

Genetically Modified Fish to be Sold in US

Genetically modified (GM) salmon could soon be available in US supermarkets, after regulators decided that the fish was suitable for production and sale.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been reviewing the case for several years. The salmon, which is produced by AquaBounty Technologies, is the first time that a GM animal has been approved as a human food.
Several groups have argued against the approval of the GM salmon, saying that its safety has not been proven. Environmental groups are worried that the GM salmon could escape, which might affect wild salmon in seas or rivers. Many of these groups are putting pressure on US supermarkets not to sell the product, which will go on sale in 2017 or later.
But Ronald Stotish, chief executive of AquaBounty Technologies, welcomed the FDA approval. He said that the GM salmon provides nutritious food to customers in an environmentally friendly way.
The GM salmon product, called AquAdvantage, is an Atlantic salmon with genes added to make it grow faster than non-GM salmon. It will be farmed in tanks in Canada and Panama, and the FDA said that the company has several systems in place to stop the fish escaping.
The fish will only be available in the US. In Europe, where opposition to GM food is stronger, no GM animals can be produced or sold. Joe Perry, former chair of the European Food Safety Panel, said that if a company wanted to produce or sell GM salmon in Europe, they would need to provide a lot more data to show that the fish were safe.
But the US does have many groups who are strongly against GM food, and who criticized the FDA decision. Food & Water Watch said it would do everything it could to stop the fish being put on sale.
The FDA said that there are several systems in the tanks to stop the escape of eggs and fish. And the GM salmon are sterile, “so that even if they did escape, they would be unable to reproduce in the wild”, it said.
Some scientists welcomed the FDA decision, saying that FDA tests have shown that the fish is safe.
“I view the decision as a win-win situation for the environment and consumers,” said William Muir, genetics professor at Purdue University. “The science is clear; there is no evidence that these fish are dangerous to either human health or the environment. In contrast, using wild salmon as a food source is not sustainable, because we are taking too many fish from the oceans.”
