A half-empty venue tells the story of Azealia Banks’s career. Labeled a star in the making when she emerged in 2011, the Harlem rapper has lost much of the energy expected of her. Problems with her record company meant an extremely delayed debut album, originally scheduled to come out three years ago but still hasn’t. On top of that, she has a bad habit of cancelling shows: this one was rescheduled twice.

“Thank you for sticking by me,” she told the small crowd. The reason she still has fans is clear: Banks is a superb rapper. With two dancers, back-up vocalists, a DJ, and wind machines at the front of the stage, she performed like a star.

Previously a Student at a New York performing arts school, she brought her songs to life with her acting talent. Most songs centre around relationships and sexuality, with light and fast speech including many insults. New song “Yung Rapunxel” was partly delivered through a megaphone, Banks yelling “I wanna be free!” in anger with heavy music in the background.

Before “Chasing Time,” a speech was given about how her record company had insisted she write a radio-friendly song, so she produced this—a loud mess with bad singing. Another song, “Wallace”, was described as “incredible” by the rapper, but quality was low despite her high self-confidence.

앞서 “Chasing Time,”에서 한 말은 그녀의 음반회사가 어떻게 그녀가 라디오 방송에 적합한 곳을 쓰고 있다고 주장해왔었는지를 보여줍니다. 그래서 그녀는 거친 음성으로 이 엉망진창인 상황을 내놓았습니다.

또 다른 곡 “Wallace”는 랩퍼를 믿을 수 없음으로 묘사하였지만, 그녀의 높은 자존심에도 불구하고 곡의 완성도는 낮았습니다.

She basically specialises in one variety of song – a super-fast, dance music-type of rap track summed up by her breakthrough 2011 single “212”. It’s a great song, but the talented and entertaining Banks needs more than this if she wants to see success in the future.
