Starbucks will pay part of the bill for its US employees’ college tuition fees, at a time, when the world’s largest economy’s growth is being slowed down by heavy student debt.

The coffee chain is partnering with Arizona State University to offer discounted tuition for online bachelor’s degrees. Starbucks’ 135,000 US employees who work 20 hours a week will be eligible. The programme will replace its existing offer of $1,000 a year in tuition reimbursement at certain schools.

The company did not say how much it would spend or how many employees are expected to enrol. However Starbucks workers will receive partial tuition for the first two years and full tuition for their final two years, with no obligation to stay with the company after they complete their degrees. They can choose from about 40 programmes including engineering, education, and business. Annual tuition for ASU’s online programmes costs around $10,000.

Student debt has gained national attention as it has grown to more than $1tn from about $250bn in 2003, according to a recent US government report. It has replaced credit card debt as the second-largest group of household debt after mortgages.

Economists warn that this problem is holding young people back from making big purchases like houses and cars, contributing to slow economic growth. In addition, increasing debt and challenges balancing work with school has made it difficult for many students to complete their degrees, leaving them owing money on an unfinished education.

Last week President Barack Obama announced plans to expand a programme that limits loan repayments, even as congressional Republicans blocked a law that would allow more people to refinance their loans. Starbucks said its new programme is meant to help more students finish school.
