Is it all Downhill for Volkswagen?

German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) must find a new boss after Martin Winterkorn resigned because of the scandal over diesel emissions. Matthias Müller, C.E.O. of Porsche, is the favorite to get this job, after Mr. Winterkorn managed the company for eight years.

독일 자동차제조사 폭스바겐은 반드시 디젤 배출량에 대한 스캔들로 사임한 마틴 빈터콘(Martin Winterkorn) 후의 새로운 경영자를 찾아야만 한다. 빈터콘씨가 8년동안 회사를 일궈온 뒤, 이 자리에 가장 유력한 인물은 포르쉐의 경영자 마티아스 뮐러(Matthias Müller)입니다. 

Mr. Müller is close to the Porsche and Piech families, who are the main decision-makers of VW. Also, he knows Volkswagen very well and people say he’s a man who says what he thinks.

Things are not looking good for VW since the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found out that they changed their diesel cars to get higher results in emissions tests. This means the group could receive criminal charges and very large fines.

The EPA said that VW installed a software to reduce the cars’ emissions, but only during emissions tests. During normal driving, the emissions are actually much higher.

The EPA said that, since 2008, VW has sold 482,000 of these cars in the US. But VW said they sold 11m of them worldwide and it will pay €6.5bn to cover the costs of the scandal.

A senior official at the EPA told the Financial Times, “Volkswagen has used extreme methods to trick the system.”

미환경보호단체의 한 상임위원이 "폭스바겐은 시스템을 속이기 위해 극악의 방법을 사용해 왔습니다." 라고 파이낸셜 뉴스에 말했습니다.

The EPA have very strict emissions tests to follow clean air regulations, the official said, and it took a “sophisticated, hard, continuous and coordinated effort” to beat it. “We’ve seen similar changes to emission rates, but nothing of this size,” the official said.

The German government announced yesterday that Volkswagen changed emissions in Europe as well as in the US. Alexander Dobrindt, German transport minister, said VW “also manipulated cars in Europe with 1.6 and 2.0 liter diesel engines”.

The banks Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s said VW’s credit-rating could go down. While some analysts hope that the new C.E.O. will change the way VW is managed, others fear that the cost of the scandal will continue to go up.
