A £40M Mistake

The John Lewis Partnership has been known as a model employer around the world, but now it has to pay £40m back to its employees. Underpaid staff will be compensated because of a mistake in calculation in holiday pay over the last seven years.

John Lewis said by offering to pay back employees directly, rather than having staff make claims themselves, they were doing more than what was necessary.

Although the partnership is offering to compensate staff starting from 2006 the Working Time Regulations were introduced in 1998. So, it is possible that the company could receive additional claims from the first eight years, according to employment lawyers.
