Genetically Modified Fish to be Sold in US

Genetically modified (GM) salmon could soon be available in US supermarkets, after regulators decided that the fish was suitable for production and sale.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been reviewing the case for several years. The salmon, which is produced by AquaBounty Technologies, is the first time that a GM animal has been approved as a human food.

Several groups have argued against the approval of the GM salmon, saying that its safety has not been proven. Many of these groups are putting pressure on US supermarkets not to sell the product, which will go on sale in 2017 or later.

But Ronald Stotish, chief executive of AquaBounty Technologies, welcomed the FDA approval. He said that the GM salmon provides nutritious food to customers in an environmentally friendly way.
The GM salmon product, called AquAdvantage, is an Atlantic salmon with genes added to make it grow faster than non-GM salmon. It will be farmed in tanks in Canada and Panama, and the FDA said that the company has several systems in place to stop the fish escaping.

The fish will only be available in the US. In Europe, where opposition to GM food is stronger, no GM animals can be produced or sold. Joe Perry, former chair of the European Food Safety Panel, said that if a company wanted to produce or sell GM salmon in Europe, they would need to provide a lot more data to show that the fish were safe.

But the US does have many groups who are strongly against GM food, and who criticized the FDA decision. Food & Water Watch said it would do everything it could to stop the fish being put on sale.
The FDA said that there are several systems in the tanks to stop the escape of eggs and fish. And the GM salmon are sterile, “so that even if they did escape, they would be unable to reproduce in the wild”, it said.

Some scientists welcomed the FDA decision, saying that FDA tests have shown that the fish is safe.
“I view the decision as a win-win situation for the environment and consumers,” said William Muir, genetics professor at Purdue University. “The science is clear; there is no evidence that these fish are dangerous to either human health or the environment. In contrast, using wild salmon as a food source is not sustainable, because we are taking too many fish from the oceans.”
