Sesame
Sesame is an app for anyone who finds recipes online. This app will take the information from a website, and show it to you in a simple way, so that it is easier to use when cooking. You can also save shopping lists, and sort recipes into different types. You can also save recipes and use them offline—it’s like having a recipe book on your phone.
Table8
This restaurant reservation app has been recently introduced in San Francisco. It helps people to book tables at popular restaurants, where it can be difficult to find a free table. The user pays for the booking—the app takes some of the money, and the restaurant takes the rest. So if you are travelling through San Francisco, the app could help you get a table at restaurants like Boulevard or Spruce, which are difficult to get into otherwise. The app could be released in New York and London in the near future.
Up Coffee
This app, made by Jawbone in San Francisco, shows you how much caffeine you have in your body. The company also makes a wristband, which measures exercise and sleep. The app and the wristband can be used together, but the app can also be used by itself. You tell the app how many teas, coffees and cola drinks you have had, and when you had them. The app can then find out how much caffeine is in your body, and how long it will stay in your blood.
Gluugle
This app, made by blogger Carol Roberts, helps you to find restaurants and cafes with gluten-free options. The app gives you a list of places near you, together with reviews to help you choose the best place. At the moment, the app only works in the UK, but it will continue to grow and add new places.
Carol Roberts
Where Chefs Eat
It isn’t cheap, but this app gives you important information for food-lovers: the favourite restaurants of the world’s best chefs, from Melbourne to Sao Paulo. You can find sushi bars in Tokyo, or tapas places in Barcelona. A second edition will be released soon, with more recommendations in more countries. There is also a book, but the app is more useful for travellers.
1) gluten-free:
2) at the moment: 지금

Take a Holiday and Earn More Money
By Emma Jacobs
In the past, people believed that work would become easier in the future and that we would work less. In 1930 for example, John Maynard Keynes said that in 100 years’ time people would work three-hour shift or a 15-hour week. In 2007, Tim Ferriss gave advice about how to work a four-hour week. But in reality, many of us today do not even use all the days off we have as part of our contract.
As Shawn Achor, the author of The Happiness Advantage, writes in the Harvard Business Review, “four out of 10 employees say that they can’t take their vacation because they have too much work to do”.
Even in those companies which give their employees as much holiday as they want, people often do not take days off. Software group Evernote, for example, decided to offer an incentive to encourage its staff to go on holiday when it discovered they did not use enough of their “limitless ” holiday. Chief executive Phil Libin explained: “We said, ‘Go somewhere interesting for at least a week and we’ll give you $1,000 of spending money’ . . . Just to show we really do want you to take vacations.”
Mr Achor describes a report Project did called Time Off, a campaign by the US Travel Association to promote business reasons for using your paid leave . The research found that people who take all their vacation time have a 6.5 per cent higher chance of getting a promotion or pay rise than people who do not take 11 or more days of their holiday. It is not clear what the reasons are. Other reports suggest that people are more productive if they do fewer hours. Happy workers are better at their jobs than the miserable and stressed workers.
There are several reasons why employees feel they cannot take time off. Some people, for example, feel their work and company is much more important than their personal lives, and there are also hard managers who have unrealistic expectations. But as Mr Achor puts it: “Whether or not you take a vacation, you’re still going to have a lot of work to do. Life has an end, and work has no end.”

How Online Shopping is Working on its Weakness
By Pilita Clark – Paris,
Dawsons Music, founded in 1898 in Warrington, says it is the oldest retailer of musical instruments in England. These days, however, it is using one of the newest technologies available to sell its goods on the internet: a virtual link between its sales staff and online shoppers.
Staff wearing a pair of smart glasses, equipped with a camera, can advise online shoppers about the specifics of a purchase. The staff can hear, but can’t see the customers.
The company behind the technology, GoInStore, is 18 months old and its products have been “online” for about three or four months. “I was visiting a high-end handbag store and there were four staff standing around,” says Andre Hordagoda, GoInStore’s co-founder.
“I thought, why don’t we take some of our in store staff and present them on the web? Most retailers consider the salesperson to be their most valuable asset– they live and breathe the product and they are the best at helping someone to consider whether it is the right item to purchase,” he adds.
Once they choose something they are interested in buying, online shoppers can click on a tab that connects them to a store. The system matches the shopper with the most suitable person on the sales floor, based on the type of shopper, what they want to buy and where their location is.
How have sales staff responded? “Some people pick up the new technology quicker than others”, says Mr Hordagoda. “But when they start to get results, they start to think differently. Everyone likes the glasses, they’re innovative, but we can do it over a mobile phone too.”
Mr Hordagoda, who has worked in retail for the past ten years, says that making a personal connection with a customer just at the right time can help secure an online sale. Typically, online customers only buy something as one-tenth as often as in-store visitors.
“I cannot tell you exactly how well it is going, but let us say that retailers who have started using it are now taking on more staff just to use the technology,” Mr Hordagoda says.
While most people shopping for groceries online do buy things, it is difficult to get people to shop online in other areas. Traditionally, customers prefer to feel and try their clothes and shoes before buying. People looking for a niche item, or anything that needs specialist advice, such as a musical instrument or a car, also normally go out to a store.
But retailers are using technology more and more to increase their customers’ trust and personalize their buying experience, with the possibility of making more sales. One of Mr Hordagoda’s other clients is Amari, the luxury car dealer, which he says is starting to sell cars over its website.
“For a long time, customer service was seen by many as a cost that needs to be minimized, but times are changing. Good customer service can actually help to boost profits,” says Matt Pebble, the managing director of the UK retail at Accenture. “Our surveys regularly show that good service motivates customers to be more loyal. But such technologies are worth nothing unless the basics of customer service are already working, he adds. “The reality is that most companies and retailers find it difficult to solve their customers’ problems with a single contact.”

Ready for the Global Conference?
By Pilita Clark – Paris
Would you like a piece of chicken with herbs and a glass of Chardonnay wine? How about a bit of crème caramel or tarte au chocolat?
All this is on the menu at the UN’s global conference about the environment in Paris (COP21). And there is also a bakery there offering hot baguettes and croissants.
So it looks like the French are doing their best to organize good meals for the delegates this year. The food at these meetings in the past has not been very tasty. That’s why some delegates secretly took food from outside with them into the venue. This year, there are many cafés and restaurants around the venue of the conference, in the north of Paris.
You can also find many relaxation rooms with sofas and soft lights there. This is a change for older delegates. Some talks can last for over 24 hours and some of them have had to sleep on the floor. If delegates would like to take a break from their talks about environmental issues, they can spend time in the new meditation rooms.
Environmentalists have said there are not enough vegetarian meals for such a conference. But the organizers have thought about the environment and will charge delegates 1 euro for a plastic cup which they will receive back when they return the cup. This makes sure people use less plastic glasses and so there is less waste.
They also don’t have to take a polluting taxi back to their hotel after the conference. They can simply book an electric car or get a pass for Paris trains and buses, for free.
This conference is better organized than the last conference in Copenhagen in 2009, where delegates had to stand in long lines and wait outside for hours to get in the conference building because the security staff had too much to do.
This time, each delegate has a time when they must arrive. The Paris terror attacks made people think it could be chaotic, but the lines to get through security have been quick.
The question is: will the better organization of the conference really help the delegates to find a global climate agreement? It would be the first since 1997.

Can ‘Smart Cups’ Help Your Thirst?

Can ‘Smart Cups’ Help Your Thirst?
By Tim Bradshaw
Drinking water is one of our most basic needs. Our body tells us when we need to drink: we feel thirsty. Adults do not normally have a problem remembering to drink enough water to survive.
But many companies want to tell us that we have a hydration problem. New smart cups from companies such as Thermos and Mark One—a start-up based in San Francisco—can connect with a smartphone to provide detailed information about water drinking habits. But does drinking water really need all this technology?
Being well hydrated has many benefits: it makes us feel more focused, and can also make the body’s immune system stronger. The traditional advice is to drink eight glasses of water a day, but actually the true recommendations are higher: 2.7 litres per day for women, and 3.7 for men, according to the US Institute of Medicine. However, the institute also said that most people can stay hydrated simply by drinking when thirsty.
Mark One believes that its smart cup technology can do a better job than humans. I used their $100 cup, called Pryme Vessyl. I told the app my age, weight, height, sleeping hours and exercise habits. Pryme Vessyl uses this data to create a personal hydration target. A blue light on the cup lights up when you have drunk enough.
Apart from the light, the cup has a minimalist design. It is made of plain white plastic, and is pleasant to hold, whether the cup contains iced water or hot tea. The inside is made of glass, which makes the whole thing heavy to hold. The top does not prevent leaks, making the cup unsuitable for use during exercise—the one time when it might be really useful.
When using Pryme, I found that my motivation to continue was simple: I wanted to stop the endless notifications arriving on my phone. Every time I took a sip of water, my phone would deliver a message telling me to take another, in order to “get to the next level.”
Mark One is also planning to develop a more advanced cup, which can track what you drink in more detail, including information about calorie and caffeine consumption. However, this product is already more than a year behind schedule, and it is not clear when it will be available.
Mark One
The $60 Smart Lid, made by Thermos, is more basic. The app tracks how much water is in the bottle, the temperature, how much water you have drunk, and other useless statistics such as how many minutes you have spent drinking or how many sips you have taken that day. You can also set a water consumption goal in litres and see how close you are to your daily target.
The plastic bottle and its lid are light and watertight, which at least makes it more practical than the Pryme. But I found the data transfer unreliable. One time, it told me I had spent 1,143 minutes taking one sip to consume seven millilitres of water.
The human body comes with excellent hydration sensors, which are pre-installed at no cost to the user. We may all benefit from the occasional reminder to drink more water, but there are far cheaper ways to do that than these devices. The “Internet of things” may be real, but the idea that a cup or bottle must be smart just does not hold water.
1) hydration: any of a class of compounds containing chemically combined water. In the case of some hydrates, as washing soda, Na 2 CO 3 10H 2 O, the water is loosely held and is easily lost on heating; in others, as sulfuric acid, SO 3 H 2 O, or H 2 SO 4, it is strongly held as water of constitution / 수화작용
2) minimalist: a person who favors a moderate approach to the achievement of a set of goals or who holds minimal expectations for the success of a program / 미니멀리스트(되도록 소수의 단순한 요소를 통해 최대 효과를 이루려는 사고방식을 지닌 예술가)
3) plain: clear or distinct to the eye or ear /
4) pleasant: pleasing, agreeable, or enjoyable; giving pleasure /
5) leak: an unintended hole, crack, or the like, through which liquid, gas, light, etc., enters or escapes / (액체・기체가) 새는 곳[구멍/틈], 누출(되는 액체・기체)
7) motivation: the act or an instance of motivating, or providing with a reason to act in a certain way / 자극, 유도; (행동의) 동기 부여; 학습 의욕 유발
