What is the Second Most Useful Language?

Some years ago, I had an interview with a French businessman. Before the interview, his press officer called me to discuss the interview, and told me that it would be in French.

I spent a whole afternoon preparing and practising. When I met the man, I asked him what language he wanted to use, and he said: “English.”
저는 모든 오후시간을 준비와 연습에 투자했어요. 제가 인터뷰어를 만났을 때, 저는 그에게 어떤 언어를 사용하길 원하는지 물었고, 그는 "영어" 라고 대답했습니다.

This shows the changing attitudes of the French towards English. There has been anger in France over new laws which allow universities to use English more in teaching. But, 90 per cent of French people born between 1985 and 1989 feel that there is no argument: English is the language of academia.
이것은 영어를 향한 프랑스인들의 태도변화를 보여주죠. 대학생들의 교육에 더 많은 영어를 사용하는 것을 허락한 새로운 법안에 대해 프랑스는 계속 화가나 있어요. 하지만, 1985년과 1989년 사이에 태어난 90%의 프랑스인들은 이것에 별 논의거리가 없다고 느낍니다. 영어는 모든 학계의 용어죠.

French used to be popular as a second language. I remember meeting older people in Greece or Turkey who could speak it. But now, everyone learns English. This creates a dilemma for English speakers: what language should they learn?
불어는 제 2외국어로 인기가 있었습니다. 저는 그리스와 터키에서 만났던 노인들이 불어를 했던걸 기억해요. 그러나 지금은, 모두 영어를 배우죠. 이 상황이 영어 사용자들에게 딜레마(어떤 언어를 배워야만 하는가?) 를 만들어요. 

Many will say “none because everyone speaks English." This is a rational choice. You could spend your time learning to do something else. But there is something embarrassing about people who speak one language who are surrounded by colleagues who can speak two or more. And English speakers living abroad should certainly learn the local language. It’s polite, and it helps you to get more out of the experience.
많은 사람들이 "아무것도 없어요 누구나 영어로 말하기 때문이죠." 라고 말할거에요. 어찌보면 합리적인 선택이죠. 당신은 당신의 시간을 다른 것을 배우는데 쓸 수 있어요. 하지만 두 개 혹은 그 이상의 언어를 구사하는 동료에게 둘러쌓인 1개국어 사용자는 뭔가 당황스러울 거에요. 그리고 외국에 살고 있는 영어회화자들은 반드시 그 지역의 언어를 배워야만 합니다. 그건 예의에요, 그리고 그건 당신에게 더 많은 경험을 주죠.

But what if you are living in an English-speaking country? What language should you learn then?
하지만 만약에 당신이 영어권 국가에 살고 있다면 어떨까요? 어떤 언어를 배워야 할까요?

I’ve enjoyed studying French, but if I wanted to learn a new language now, I would choose Spanish. Brazilian Portuguese might be a good choice, but it’s only spoken in one country, and what if Brazil’s economy stops growing? The obvious choice seems to be Mandarin Chinese, but not many people I know can speak it well.
저는 불어 공부를 즐겼어요, 하지만 제가 만약 지금 새로운 언어를 배우고자 한다면, 전 스페인어를 선택할 거에요. 브라질에서 태어난 포르투갈이라면 정말 좋은 선택일거에요, 하지만 오직 하나의 국가에서만 말하겠죠, 그리고 만약 브라질의 경제성장이 멈추면요? 분명히 만다린어를 선택할 것 같네요, 하지만 많은 사람들이 만다린어를 구사할 줄 몰라요.

David Moser, an American expert on Chinese language and culture, wrote an essay about learning Chinese, explaining how difficult it is for English-speakers to learn the language. He says that Chinese is hard not only because it is very different from European languages, but also because of its writing system and intonation.
중국어 및 문화에 대한 미국의 전문가인 David Moser 는 중국어를 배우는 것에 대한 글을 썼어요. 영어권 거주민이 중국어를 배우는 것이 얼마나 어려운지를 설명하고 있죠.  그가 말하길 중국어는 유럽권 언어들과 매우 다를 뿐 아니라 글쓰기와 억양도 역시 많이 다르기 때문에 배우기가 정말 어렵다고 합니다.

So what language should English speakers learn? Any language, so that they can understand how difficult and impressive it is for foreigners to speak English to a high level all day every day.
그렇다면 어떤 언어를 영어권에 살고 있는 사람들이 배워야만 할까요? 외국인들이 높은 수준의 영어를 매일같이 말하는 것이 얼마나 어렵고 인상깊은지 이해하기 위한 어떤 언어든 괜찮겠죠.
